Background of the study
Workplace safety in healthcare institutions is a critical concern, as healthcare workers face a higher risk of injury and infection due to the nature of their work. In Nigeria, the issue of workplace safety in hospitals has been largely overlooked, with many institutions lacking comprehensive safety policies and protocols to protect healthcare professionals (Umar & Salihu, 2024). Healthcare workers, particularly in regions like Yobe State, are exposed to physical hazards such as lifting heavy patients, handling sharp instruments, and potential exposure to infectious diseases like HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis. Additionally, inadequate safety training, lack of personal protective equipment (PPE), and poor working conditions further exacerbate these risks (Musa et al., 2023).
Studies have shown that poor workplace safety policies not only affect healthcare workers' health but also reduce the quality of care provided to patients, as stressed and injured staff are less likely to perform optimally (Bamidele & Olusola, 2023). Yobe State, which faces challenges related to security, infrastructure, and healthcare resource allocation, presents a unique setting for examining workplace safety. Understanding the gaps in existing safety policies and implementing effective measures to mitigate risks could improve both healthcare worker safety and patient care quality in the region (Alhassan et al., 2024).
In recent years, the need for comprehensive workplace safety policies has gained attention, as more hospitals are recognizing the importance of protecting their staff to ensure a productive and sustainable workforce. This study aims to critically review the existing workplace safety policies in hospitals in Yobe State, highlighting areas for improvement.
Statement of the problem
In healthcare institutions in Yobe State, the lack of effective workplace safety policies has contributed to numerous occupational hazards, including physical injuries, infections, and mental health challenges among healthcare workers. Despite the importance of safety in these high-risk environments, many hospitals in Yobe State have failed to implement proper safety measures or provide adequate training to their staff. This problem is compounded by the region's economic constraints, which limit the availability of essential safety equipment and infrastructure (Aliyu et al., 2023). As a result, healthcare workers in Yobe are exposed to significant risks, which not only endanger their well-being but also negatively affect the overall quality of healthcare services in the region.
Objectives of the study
To evaluate the existing workplace safety policies in healthcare institutions in Yobe State.
To assess the challenges faced by healthcare institutions in implementing effective workplace safety policies.
To recommend strategies for improving workplace safety in Yobe State’s healthcare institutions.
Research questions
What are the existing workplace safety policies in healthcare institutions in Yobe State?
What are the major challenges faced by healthcare institutions in Yobe State in implementing workplace safety policies?
What strategies can be adopted to improve workplace safety in healthcare institutions in Yobe State?
Research hypotheses
Existing workplace safety policies in healthcare institutions in Yobe State are inadequate to protect healthcare workers from occupational hazards.
Limited resources and lack of training are the major challenges preventing the implementation of effective workplace safety policies in Yobe State’s healthcare institutions.
The adoption of comprehensive workplace safety policies will significantly improve healthcare worker safety in Yobe State.
Scope and limitations of the study
This study will focus on healthcare institutions in Yobe State, examining the workplace safety policies in hospitals in the region. The study will be limited to a select number of hospitals, and the findings may not be fully representative of healthcare institutions in other regions. Additionally, the study will primarily utilize qualitative data from interviews with healthcare workers and administrators, limiting the scope of its findings.
